If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term STAAR Surgical Company (NASDAQ:STAA) shareholders. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 68% drop in the share price over that period. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 22% in the last three months.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the three years that the share price fell, STAAR Surgical's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 3.3% each year. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 32% annual reduction in the share price. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy. Having said that, the market is still optimistic, given the P/E ratio of 52.89.

A Different Perspective

Investors in STAAR Surgical had a tough year, with a total loss of 16%, against a market gain of about 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 6% per year over five years.
