Pulmonx Corporation (NASDAQ:LUNG) Soars 47% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
Those holding Pulmonx Corporation (NASDAQ:LUNG) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 47% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 54% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, Pulmonx may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.8x and even P/S higher than 8x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Pulmonx Has Been Performing
With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Pulmonx has been doing relatively well. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Pulmonx's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 20%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 75% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 20% per year during the coming three years according to the six analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.6% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Pulmonx's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Pulmonx's P/S
Pulmonx's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
A look at Pulmonx's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
