With EPS Growth And More, Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) Is Interesting
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Intuitive Surgical's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Over the last three years, Intuitive Surgical has grown EPS by 11% per year. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Intuitive Surgical shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 26% to 31%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Intuitive Surgical Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$74b company like Intuitive Surgical. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$317m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalizations over US$8.0b, like Intuitive Surgical, the median CEO pay is around US$13m.
Intuitive Surgical offered total compensation worth US$8.1m to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
Is Intuitive Surgical Worth Keeping An Eye On?
One positive for Intuitive Surgical is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for Intuitive Surgical, but the fun does not stop there. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching.
