It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Intuitive Surgical Growing?

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Over the last three years, Intuitive Surgical has grown EPS by 13% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Intuitive Surgical shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 24% to 32%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Intuitive Surgical Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$108b company like Intuitive Surgical. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$465m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations over US$8.0b, like Intuitive Surgical, the median CEO pay is around US$12m.

Intuitive Surgical offered total compensation worth US$6.0m to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is Intuitive Surgical Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, Intuitive Surgical is a growing business, which is what I like to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Intuitive Surgical, but the pretty picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. Of course, identifying quality businesses is only half the battle; investors need to know whether the stock is undervalued. So you might want to consider this free discounted cashflow valuation of Intuitive Surgical.

Although Intuitive Surgical certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
