Possible Bearish Signals With ICU Medical Insiders Disposing Stock
The fact that multiple ICU Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ICUI) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

ICU Medical Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The insider, George Lopez, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.4m worth of shares at a price of US$107 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$156). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 3.3% of George Lopez's holding.

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of ICU Medical shares. In total, President Daniel Woolson sold US$350k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Does ICU Medical Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that ICU Medical insiders own 5.9% of the company, worth about US$227m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
So What Do The ICU Medical Insider Transactions Indicate?
