Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ:CERS) Stock Catapults 31% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Despite an already strong run, Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ:CERS) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 31% in the last thirty days. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 11% is also fairly reasonable.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Cerus may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.9x, considering almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.4x and even P/S higher than 9x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Cerus Performed Recently?

Cerus' revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Cerus' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 13%. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 26% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 14% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 60% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we can see why Cerus is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Cerus' P/S?

Cerus' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that Cerus maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
