AtriCure, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATRC) Soars 26% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
AtriCure, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATRC) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. But the last month did very little to improve the 53% share price decline over the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that AtriCure's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.9x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Medical Equipment industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 3.2x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does AtriCure's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
AtriCure certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting this level of performance to taper off, keeping the P/S from soaring. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like AtriCure's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 19%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 95% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 15% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 10% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that AtriCure's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What We Can Learn From AtriCure's P/S?
AtriCure appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that AtriCure currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the wider industry. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
