In the last year, many Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALGN) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Align Technology Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Director, Joseph Lacob, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$7.7m worth of shares at a price of US$313 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$232. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Does Align Technology Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Align Technology insiders own 5.1% of the company, currently worth about US$886m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
