To understand the value of a company's earnings growth, it is imperative to consider any dilution of shareholders' interests. As it happens, Addus HomeCare issued 12% more new shares over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. To celebrate net income while ignoring dilution is like rejoicing because you have a single slice of a larger pizza, but ignoring the fact that the pizza is now cut into many more slices. How Is Dilution Impacting Addus HomeCare's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?

As you can see above, Addus HomeCare has been growing its net income over the last few years, with an annualized gain of 77% over three years. In comparison, earnings per share only gained 59% over the same period. And the 20% profit boost in the last year certainly seems impressive at first glance. But in comparison, EPS only increased by 10% over the same period. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.

In the long term, earnings per share growth should beget share price growth. So it will certainly be a positive for shareholders if Addus HomeCare can grow EPS persistently. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Alongside that dilution, it's also important to note that Addus HomeCare's profit suffered from unusual items, which reduced profit by US$17m in the last twelve months. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If Addus HomeCare doesn't see those unusual expenses repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to increase over the coming year.

Our Take On Addus HomeCare's Profit Performance

Addus HomeCare suffered from unusual items which depressed its profit in its last report; if that is not repeated then profit should be higher, all else being equal. But unfortunately the dilution means that shareholders now own a smaller proportion of the company (assuming they maintained the same number of shares). That will weigh on earnings per share, even if it is not reflected in net income. Based on these factors, it's hard to tell if Addus HomeCare's profits are a reasonable reflection of its underlying profitability.
