Should You Review Recent Insider Transactions At Pilgrim's Pride Corporation (NASDAQ:PPC)?
We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell Pilgrim's Pride Corporation (NASDAQ:PPC), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
Do Insider Transactions Matter?
Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

Pilgrim's Pride Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The insider, Jayson Penn, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$89k worth of shares at a price of US$22.31 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$19.61. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign. Jayson Penn was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.4% of Pilgrim's Pride shares, worth about US$20m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
