Lifeway Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ:LWAY) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days were the cherry on top of the stock's 314% gain in the last year, which is nothing short of spectacular.

Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies operating in the United States' Food industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.9x, you may consider Lifeway Foods as a stock to potentially avoid with its 2.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Lifeway Foods Has Been Performing

Lifeway Foods certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Lifeway Foods?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Lifeway Foods would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 13% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 57% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 10% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 1.8%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Lifeway Foods is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

Lifeway Foods shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our look into Lifeway Foods shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
