W&T Offshore's Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Even in the absence of profits, W&T Offshore is paying a dividend. It is also not generating any free cash flow, we definitely have concerns when it comes to the sustainability of the dividend.
Over the next year, EPS might fall by 14.8% based on recent performance. This will push the company into unprofitability, which means the managers will have to choose between suspending the dividend, or paying it out of cash reserves.
Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $0.82 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $0.04. The dividend has fallen 95% over that period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Over the past five years, it looks as though W&T Offshore's EPS has declined at around 15% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future.
We're Not Big Fans Of W&T Offshore's Dividend
Overall, while some might be pleased that the dividend wasn't cut, we think this may help W&T Offshore make more consistent payments in the future. The company isn't making enough to be paying as much as it is, and the other factors don't look particularly promising either. The dividend doesn't inspire confidence that it will provide solid income in the future.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
