Vital Energy, Inc.'s (NYSE:VTLE) Shares Bounce 28% But Its Business Still Trails The Market
Vital Energy, Inc. (NYSE:VTLE) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 28% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 13% over that time.
Even after such a large jump in price, Vital Energy may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 2.8x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 35x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Vital Energy hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Vital Energy's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 56%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 47% during the coming year according to the ten analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 15%, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that Vital Energy's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price move, Vital Energy's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Vital Energy maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
