Oceaneering International, Inc.'s (NYSE:OII) P/E Is Still On The Mark Following 29% Share Price Bounce
Oceaneering International, Inc. (NYSE:OII) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 43%.
Following the firm bounce in price, Oceaneering International's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 22.3x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 19x and even P/E's below 11x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Oceaneering International has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Oceaneering International's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 78% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 34% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 15%, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Oceaneering International's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Oceaneering International's P/E
Oceaneering International's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Oceaneering International's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
