Stock Analysis
The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like EQT (NYSE:EQT), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Fast Is EQT Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
Over the last three years, EQT has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. EQT's EPS skyrocketed from US$5.00 to US$7.16, in just one year; a result that's bound to bring a smile to shareholders. That's a commendable gain of 43%.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. EQT's EBIT margins have actually improved by 39.6 percentage points in the last year, to reach 66%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 50%. That's not a good look.

Are EQT Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$16b company like EQT. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. With a whopping US$96m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.
Is EQT Worth Keeping An Eye On?
If you believe that share price follows earnings per share you should definitely be delving further into EQT's strong EPS growth. With EPS growth rates like that, it's hardly surprising to see company higher-ups place confidence in the company through continuing to hold a significant investment. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 4 warning signs for EQT (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you need to be mindful of.
There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares.
