The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Alto Ingredients, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ALTO) Earnings Yet As Shares Tumble 27%
Alto Ingredients, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALTO) shares have had a horrible month, losing 27% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 14% share price drop.
Following the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 16x, you may consider Alto Ingredients as an attractive investment with its 9.7x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Alto Ingredients has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Alto Ingredients would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 142% last year. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 10.0% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that Alto Ingredients' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Alto Ingredients' P/E?
The softening of Alto Ingredients' shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Alto Ingredients maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
