Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By LendingClub Corporation's (NYSE:LC) 49% Share Price Surge
LendingClub Corporation (NYSE:LC) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 49% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 65% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, LendingClub may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 33.1x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 18x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
LendingClub has been struggling lately as its earnings have declined faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think LendingClub's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.Does Growth Match The High P/E?
LendingClub's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 55% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 37% per annum during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 10% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why LendingClub is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On LendingClub's P/E
LendingClub's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of LendingClub's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
