Did GAMCO Investors, Inc. (NYSE:GBL) Insiders Buy Up More Shares?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in GAMCO Investors, Inc. (NYSE:GBL).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

GAMCO Investors Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Leslie Daniels for US$153k worth of shares, at about US$15.38 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of US$19.00. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider bought shares at close to current prices. Leslie Daniels was the only individual insider to buy during the last year.
