The big shareholder groups in FinVolution Group (NYSE:FINV) have power over the company. Many institutions measure their performance against an index that approximates the local market. So they usually pay more attention to companies that are included in major indices.

We can see that FinVolution Group does have institutional investors; and they hold a good portion of the company's stock. This suggests some credibility amongst professional investors. But we can't rely on that fact alone since institutions make bad investments sometimes, just like everyone does. It is not uncommon to see a big share price drop if two large institutional investors try to sell out of a stock at the same time. So it is worth checking the past earnings trajectory of FinVolution Group, (below). Of course, keep in mind that there are other factors to consider, too.

It would appear that 8.2% of FinVolution Group shares are controlled by hedge funds. That catches my attention because hedge funds sometimes try to influence management, or bring about changes that will create near term value for shareholders. Because actions speak louder than words, we consider it a good sign when insiders own a significant stake in a company. In FinVolution Group's case, its Top Key Executive, Shaofeng Gu, is the largest shareholder, holding 30% of shares outstanding. With 8.2% and 7.4% of the shares outstanding respectively, Gold Dragon Worldwide Management Limited and Lightspeed China Partners are the second and third largest shareholders.

To make our study more interesting, we found that the top 4 shareholders control more than half of the company which implies that this group has considerable sway over the company's decision-making.

While studying institutional ownership for a company can add value to your research, it is also a good practice to research analyst recommendations to get a deeper understand of a stock's expected performance. There is some analyst coverage of the stock, but it could still become more well known, with time.
