Cannae Holdings, Inc.'s (NYSE:CNNE) Earnings Are Not Doing Enough For Some Investors
When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may consider Cannae Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CNNE) as a highly attractive investment with its 5x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Cannae Holdings hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Cannae Holdings' Growth Trending?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Cannae Holdings' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 59%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 105% during the coming year according to the twin analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 12%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Cannae Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From Cannae Holdings' P/E?
It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Cannae Holdings maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 3 warning signs for Cannae Holdings you should be aware of, and 2 of them are significant.
