Here's Why We Think Broadmark Realty Capital (NYSE:BRMK) Is Well Worth Watching

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Broadmark Realty Capital (NYSE:BRMK), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Broadmark Realty Capital's Improving Profits

Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, Broadmark Realty Capital's EPS shot from US$0.24 to US$0.68, over the last year. Year on year growth of 181% is certainly a sight to behold. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that Broadmark Realty Capital's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Broadmark Realty Capital maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 81% to US$121m. That's progress.

Are Broadmark Realty Capital Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Broadmark Realty Capital insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Indeed, they hold US$47m worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Despite being just 3.4% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.

Is Broadmark Realty Capital Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Broadmark Realty Capital's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So to my mind Broadmark Realty Capital is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies.
