Ryvyl Inc. (NASDAQ:RVYL) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 48% share price drop in the last month. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 74% share price decline.

Following the heavy fall in price, Ryvyl may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Diversified Financial industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.5x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Ryvyl's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times have been advantageous for Ryvyl as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Ryvyl's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 100% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 21% during the coming year according to the only analyst following the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 0.9%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we find it odd that Ryvyl is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Ryvyl's P/S

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Ryvyl's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

A look at Ryvyl's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 5 warning signs with Ryvyl (at least 1 which is potentially serious), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
