Market Participants Recognise Cantaloupe, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:CTLP) Earnings Pushing Shares 30% Higher
Cantaloupe, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTLP) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 30% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 64%.
Since its price has surged higher, Cantaloupe may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 52.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 18x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Cantaloupe's earnings growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this modest earnings performance will accelerate. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Cantaloupe's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 3.0% last year. However, due to its less than impressive performance prior to this period, EPS growth is practically non-existent over the last three years overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 41% per annum during the coming three years according to the six analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Cantaloupe's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
Cantaloupe's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Cantaloupe's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
