With EPS Growth And More, CME Group (NASDAQ:CME) Makes An Interesting Case
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like CME Group (NASDAQ:CME). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide CME Group with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is CME Group Growing?
Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. CME Group managed to grow EPS by 16% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. It's noted that CME Group's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. The music to the ears of CME Group shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 54% to 58% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are CME Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$72b company like CME Group. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$234m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.3% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. This should still be a great incentive for management to maximise shareholder value.
Does CME Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One positive for CME Group is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. For those who are looking for a little more than this, the high level of insider ownership enhances our enthusiasm for this growth. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Don't forget that there may still be risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for CME Group that you should be aware of.
