Here's Why I Think Atlanticus Holdings (NASDAQ:ATLC) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Atlanticus Holdings (NASDAQ:ATLC), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Atlanticus Holdings's Improving Profits
Over the last three years, Atlanticus Holdings has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Atlanticus Holdings's EPS soared from US$7.78 to US$10.39, in just one year. That's a impressive gain of 34%.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. I note that Atlanticus Holdings's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Atlanticus Holdings maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 41% to US$442m. That's progress.

Are Atlanticus Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Atlanticus Holdings insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 67% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping US$394m. Now that's what I call some serious skin in the game!
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Atlanticus Holdings with market caps between US$200m and US$800m is about US$2.6m.
The Atlanticus Holdings CEO received US$1.7m in compensation for the year ending . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Should You Add Atlanticus Holdings To Your Watchlist?
For growth investors like me, Atlanticus Holdings's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. If you need more convincing beyond that EPS growth rate, don't forget about the reasonable remuneration and the high insider ownership. This may only be a fast rundown, but the takeaway for me is that Atlanticus Holdings is worth keeping an eye on. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 3 warning signs for Atlanticus Holdings (1 is a bit concerning!) that you should be aware of.
Although Atlanticus Holdings certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
