Possible Bearish Signals With AGNC Investment Insiders Disposing Stock
The fact that multiple AGNC Investment Corp. (NASDAQ:AGNC) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At AGNC Investment
The Executive VP & Chief Investment Officer, Christopher Kuehl, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$553k worth of shares at a price of US$8.50 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$10.01, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 8.9% of Christopher Kuehl's stake.

Insiders At AGNC Investment Have Sold Stock Recently
Over the last three months, we've seen significant insider selling at AGNC Investment. In total, Executive VP & CFO Bernice Bell sold US$151k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.
Insider Ownership
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. AGNC Investment insiders own about US$62m worth of shares. That equates to 0.7% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About AGNC Investment Insiders?
An insider hasn't bought AGNC Investment stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. But since AGNC Investment is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. For example, AGNC Investment has 3 warning signs (and 2 which are potentially serious) we think you should know about.
