PriceSmart's (NASDAQ:PSMT) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
The board of PriceSmart, Inc. (NASDAQ:PSMT) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of $0.46 on the 31st of August, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 1.2%, which is below the industry average.

PriceSmart's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. However, prior to this announcement, PriceSmart's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 11.5%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 24% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
PriceSmart Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $0.60 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $0.92. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 4.4% over that duration. Dividends have grown relatively slowly, which is not great, but some investors may value the relative consistency of the dividend.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. We are encouraged to see that PriceSmart has grown earnings per share at 6.9% per year over the past five years. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.
We Really Like PriceSmart's Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
