Has PVH Corp.'s (NYSE:PVH) Impressive Stock Performance Got Anything to Do With Its Fundamentals?
PVH's (NYSE:PVH) stock is up by a considerable 38% over the past three months. As most would know, fundamentals are what usually guide market price movements over the long-term, so we decided to look at the company's key financial indicators today to determine if they have any role to play in the recent price movement. Specifically, we decided to study PVH's ROE in this article.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.
How Is ROE Calculated?
The formula for return on equity is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for PVH is:
9.6% = US$469m ÷ US$4.9b (Based on the trailing twelve months to August 2025).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each $1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made $0.10 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
PVH's Earnings Growth And 9.6% ROE
When you first look at it, PVH's ROE doesn't look that attractive. However, given that the company's ROE is similar to the average industry ROE of 12%, we may spare it some thought. Moreover, we are quite pleased to see that PVH's net income grew significantly at a rate of 39% over the last five years. Considering the moderately low ROE, it is quite possible that there might be some other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.
As a next step, we compared PVH's net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 17%.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is PVH fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is PVH Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?
PVH's three-year median payout ratio to shareholders is 1.6%, which is quite low. This implies that the company is retaining 98% of its profits. So it looks like PVH is reinvesting profits heavily to grow its business, which shows in its earnings growth.
Additionally, PVH has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years which means that the company is pretty serious about sharing its profits with shareholders. Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company is expected to rise to 4.8% over the next three years. However, the company's ROE is not expected to change by much despite the higher expected payout ratio.
Conclusion
On the whole, we do feel that PVH has some positive attributes. Despite its low rate of return, the fact that the company reinvests a very high portion of its profits into its business, no doubt contributed to its high earnings growth. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
