Landsea Homes Corporation (NASDAQ:LSEA) Shares Fly 28% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth

Despite an already strong run, Landsea Homes Corporation (NASDAQ:LSEA) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 28% in the last thirty days. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Landsea Homes may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 3.4x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 16x and even P/E's higher than 31x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Recent times have been advantageous for Landsea Homes as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Landsea Homes' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 229% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 290% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 50% as estimated by the twin analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 6.0%.

In light of this, it's understandable that Landsea Homes' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Landsea Homes' P/E?

Landsea Homes' recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Landsea Homes' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
