We Think Cricut's (NASDAQ:CRCT) Solid Earnings Are Understated
The market seemed underwhelmed by the solid earnings posted by Cricut, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRCT) recently. Our analysis suggests that there are some reasons for hope that investors should be aware of.
Examining Cashflow Against Cricut's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
For the year to September 2025, Cricut had an accrual ratio of -0.63. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of US$200m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of US$80.8m. Cricut's free cash flow actually declined over the last year, which is disappointing, like non-biodegradable balloons.

Our Take On Cricut's Profit Performance
Happily for shareholders, Cricut produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Based on this observation, we consider it possible that Cricut's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at 31% per year over the last three years. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. To help with this, we've discovered 3 warning signs (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you ought to be aware of before buying any shares in Cricut.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Cricut's profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
