MSA Safety Insiders Sell US$6.9m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
The fact that multiple MSA Safety Incorporated (NYSE:MSA) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At MSA Safety
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Non-Executive Chairman, Nishan Vartanian, for US$2.0m worth of shares, at about US$185 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$172. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.
In the last year MSA Safety insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that MSA Safety insiders own 5.4% of the company, worth about US$354m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At MSA Safety Tell Us?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded MSA Safety shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of MSA Safety insider transactions don't fill us with confidence.
