The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in MillerKnoll (NASDAQ:MLKN). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is MillerKnoll Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even when EPS earnings per share (EPS) growth is unexceptional, company value can be created if this rate is sustained each year. So it's easy to see why many investors focus in on EPS growth. It's good to see that MillerKnoll's EPS has grown from US$0.85 to US$0.99 over twelve months. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 17% gain.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. MillerKnoll's EBIT margins are flat but, worryingly, its revenue is actually down. Suffice it to say that is not a great sign of growth.

Are MillerKnoll Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

We do note that, in the last year, insiders sold US$276k worth of shares. But that's far less than the US$1.5m insiders spent purchasing stock. We find this encouraging because it suggests they are optimistic about MillerKnoll'sfuture. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Non-Executive Chairman Michael Volkema for US$1.0m worth of shares, at about US$16.61 per share.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for MillerKnoll bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Indeed, they hold US$21m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. While their ownership only accounts for 1.1%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.
