We Like These Underlying Return On Capital Trends At Pentair (NYSE:PNR)

There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So on that note, Pentair (NYSE:PNR) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Pentair:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.16 = US$922m ÷ (US$6.7b - US$913m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).

So, Pentair has an ROCE of 16%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 12% generated by the Machinery industry.
