Possible Bearish Signals With Parker-Hannifin Insiders Disposing Stock
The fact that multiple Parker-Hannifin Corporation (NYSE:PH) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Parker-Hannifin Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the VP, General Counsel & Secretary, Joseph Leonti, sold US$2.5m worth of shares at a price of US$631 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$669, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 20% of Joseph Leonti's stake.

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Parker-Hannifin shares. In total, insiders dumped US$5.2m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.
Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Parker-Hannifin insiders own 0.5% of the company, worth about US$424m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
