Lennox International Inc. (NYSE:LII) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 15th of July to $1.30, which will be 13% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of $1.15. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 0.8%, which is below the industry average.

Lennox International's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Before making this announcement, Lennox International was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 28.8%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 18%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Lennox International Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $1.20, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $4.60. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 14% over that duration. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. We are encouraged to see that Lennox International has grown earnings per share at 20% per year over the past five years. Lennox International definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.

We Really Like Lennox International's Dividend

In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
