Investors in L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) have seen returns of 17% over the past year
On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But not every stock you buy will perform as well as the overall market. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:LHX) share price is up 15% in the last year, that falls short of the market return. Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 1.4% in the last three years.
Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last year L3Harris Technologies grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 28%. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 15% increase in the share price. So it seems like the market has cooled on L3Harris Technologies, despite the growth. Interesting.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of L3Harris Technologies, it has a TSR of 17% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
L3Harris Technologies provided a TSR of 17% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 4% per year over five year. This suggests the company might be improving over time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that L3Harris Technologies is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those shouldn't be ignored...
