Celebrations may be in order for GMS Inc. (NYSE:GMS) shareholders, with the analysts delivering a significant upgrade to their statutory estimates for the company. The analysts greatly increased their revenue estimates, suggesting a stark improvement in business fundamentals. Investor sentiment seems to be improving too, with the share price up 5.3% to US$71.00 over the past 7 days. Could this big upgrade push the stock even higher?

Following the latest upgrade, GMS' seven analysts currently expect revenues in 2024 to be US$5.2b, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are supposed to sink 14% to US$7.05 in the same period. Previously, the analysts had been modelling revenues of US$4.7b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$5.78 in 2024. So we can see there's been a pretty clear increase in analyst sentiment in recent times, with both revenues and earnings per share receiving a decent lift in the latest estimates.

It will come as no surprise to learn that the analysts have increased their price target for GMS 17% to US$76.63 on the back of these upgrades. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. Currently, the most bullish analyst values GMS at US$85.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$68.00. Still, with such a tight range of estimates, it suggests the analysts have a pretty good idea of what they think the company is worth.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 1.6% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 15% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 4.7% per year. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - GMS is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away from this upgrade is that analysts upgraded their earnings per share estimates for this year, expecting improving business conditions. Fortunately, they also upgraded their revenue estimates, and are forecasting revenues to grow slower than the wider market. Given that the consensus looks almost universally bullish, with a substantial increase to forecasts and a higher price target, GMS could be worth investigating further.
