Investors Shouldn't Overlook GMS' (NYSE:GMS) Impressive Returns On Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, the ROCE of GMS (NYSE:GMS) looks great, so lets see what the trend can tell us.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for GMS:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.20 = US$506m ÷ (US$3.3b - US$706m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to April 2023).
Thus, GMS has an ROCE of 20%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 13% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For GMS Tell Us?
The trends we've noticed at GMS are quite reassuring. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 20%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 110% more capital is being employed now too. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at GMS thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
The Bottom Line On GMS' ROCE
To sum it up, GMS has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if GMS can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
