Flowserve Corporation (NYSE:FLS) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 12th of April to $0.21. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 2.0%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Flowserve's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Flowserve's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 133.2% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 25% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Flowserve Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $0.56 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $0.84. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.1% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. It's encouraging to see that Flowserve has been growing its earnings per share at 12% a year over the past five years. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.

We Really Like Flowserve's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Flowserve is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Flowserve that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
