Is Custom Truck One Source (NYSE:CTOS) Using Too Much Debt?
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that Custom Truck One Source, Inc. What Risk Does Debt Bring?

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of September 2022 Custom Truck One Source had US$1.72b of debt, an increase on US$1.58b, over one year. And it doesn't have much cash, so its net debt is about the same.
How Strong Is Custom Truck One Source's Balance Sheet?
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Custom Truck One Source had liabilities of US$562.4m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$1.43b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$26.2m in cash and US$209.9m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$1.76b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Given this deficit is actually higher than the company's market capitalization of US$1.68b, we think shareholders really should watch Custom Truck One Source's debt levels, like a parent watching their child ride a bike for the first time. But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. But at least it's pretty decent at growing its EBIT; that's encouraging. We're quite clear that we consider Custom Truck One Source to be really rather risky, as a result of its balance sheet health. For this reason we're pretty cautious about the stock, and we think shareholders should keep a close eye on its liquidity. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet.
