Here's Why We Think Core & Main (NYSE:CNM) Is Well Worth Watching

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Core & Main (NYSE:CNM), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Core & Main Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Core & Main has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Core & Main's EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from US$1.78 to US$2.08. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 17% gain.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. EBIT margins for Core & Main remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 8.6% to US$6.6b. That's a real positive.

Are Core & Main Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Prior to investment, it's always a good idea to check that the management team is paid reasonably. Pay levels around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. For companies with market capitalisations between US$4.0b and US$12b, like Core & Main, the median CEO pay is around US$8.1m.

Core & Main offered total compensation worth US$5.6m to its CEO in the year to January 2023. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Does Core & Main Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Core & Main is that it is growing profits.
