Cadre Holdings' (NYSE:CDRE) Dividend Will Be Increased To $0.0875
The board of Cadre Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CDRE) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 9.4% on the 16th of February to $0.0875, up from last year's comparable payment of $0.08. This takes the annual payment to 0.9% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Cadre Holdings' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. However, Cadre Holdings' earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 41.3%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 27% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Cadre Holdings Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. The most recent annual payment of $0.32 is about the same as the annual payment 2 years ago. Modest dividend growth is good to see, especially with the payments being relatively stable. However, the payment history is relatively short and we wouldn't want to rely on this dividend too much.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Cadre Holdings' EPS has fallen by approximately 11% per year during the past five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
Our Thoughts On Cadre Holdings' Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
