Returns On Capital At AMETEK (NYSE:AME) Have Stalled

If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So, when we ran our eye over AMETEK's (NYSE:AME) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on AMETEK is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.14 = US$1.8b ÷ (US$15b - US$2.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

Therefore, AMETEK has an ROCE of 14%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 11% generated by the Electrical industry.

How Are Returns Trending?

While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. The company has employed 49% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 14%. Since 14% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.

The Bottom Line

The main thing to remember is that AMETEK has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 116% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.

While AMETEK doesn't shine too bright in this respect, it's still worth seeing if the company is trading at attractive prices. You can find that out with our FREE intrinsic value estimation for AME on our platform.
