AGCO Corporation's (NYSE:AGCO) Shares Bounce 25% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
AGCO Corporation (NYSE:AGCO) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 25% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 5.6% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, AGCO may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Machinery industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does AGCO's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
With revenue that's retreating more than the industry's average of late, AGCO has been very sluggish. Perhaps the market isn't expecting future revenue performance to improve, which has kept the P/S suppressed. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, AGCO would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 23%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 5.8% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 2.1% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 4.4% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why AGCO's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On AGCO's P/S
AGCO's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of AGCO's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
