Even With A 47% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Polar Power, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:POLA) Performance Completely

Polar Power, Inc. (NASDAQ:POLA) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 47% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the last month did very little to improve the 54% share price decline over the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Polar Power may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x, considering almost half of all companies in the Electrical industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Polar Power Performed Recently?

For example, consider that Polar Power's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Polar Power would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 22%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 36% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

It's interesting to note that the rest of the industry is similarly expected to grow by 13% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it odd that Polar Power is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain recent growth rates.

What Does Polar Power's P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite Polar Power's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Polar Power revealed its three-year revenue trends looking similar to current industry expectations hasn't given the P/S the boost we expected, given that it's lower than the wider industry P/S, There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching the company's performance. medium-term
