Here's Why We Think Nordson (NASDAQ:NDSN) Is Well Worth Watching

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Nordson (NASDAQ:NDSN). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

How Quickly Is Nordson Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. We can see that in the last three years Nordson grew its EPS by 15% per year. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Nordson remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 9.7% to US$2.6b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are Nordson Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$13b company like Nordson. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$961m. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalisations over US$8.0b, like Nordson, the median CEO pay is around US$13m.

Nordson offered total compensation worth US$10m to its CEO in the year to October 2021. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does Nordson Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Nordson is that it is growing profits. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Nordson, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. Even so, be aware that Nordson is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
