We're Not Very Worried About FTC Solar's (NASDAQ:FTCI) Cash Burn Rate
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether FTC Solar (NASDAQ:FTCI) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

Does FTC Solar Have A Long Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. In December 2021, FTC Solar had US$102m in cash, and was debt-free. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$134m. That means it had a cash runway of around 9 months as of December 2021. Importantly, analysts think that FTC Solar will reach cashflow breakeven in around 11 months. So there's a very good chance it won't need more cash, when you consider the burn rate will be reducing in that period. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
Is FTC Solar's Revenue Growing?
We're hesitant to extrapolate on the recent trend to assess its cash burn, because FTC Solar actually had positive free cash flow last year, so operating revenue growth is probably our best bet to measure, right now. It's nice to see that operating revenue was up 44% in the last year. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can FTC Solar Raise More Cash Easily?
While FTC Solar is showing solid revenue growth, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
FTC Solar has a market capitalisation of US$364m and burnt through US$134m last year, which is 37% of the company's market value. That's fairly notable cash burn, so if the company had to sell shares to cover the cost of another year's operations, shareholders would suffer some costly dilution.
How Risky Is FTC Solar's Cash Burn Situation?
Even though its cash runway makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought FTC Solar's revenue growth was relatively promising. There's no doubt that shareholders can take a lot of heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven before too long. Based on the factors mentioned in this article, we think its cash burn situation warrants some attention from shareholders, but we don't think they should be worried. An in-depth examination of risks revealed 3 warning signs for FTC Solar that readers should think about before committing capital to this stock.
