Investors Will Want FTAI Aviation's (NASDAQ:FTAI) Growth In ROCE To Persist
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at FTAI Aviation (NASDAQ:FTAI) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for FTAI Aviation:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = US$381m ÷ (US$3.2b - US$244m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, FTAI Aviation has an ROCE of 13%. By itself that's a normal return on capital and it's in line with the industry's average returns of 13%.

The Trend Of ROCE
The trends we've noticed at FTAI Aviation are quite reassuring. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 13%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 21% more capital is being employed now too. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at FTAI Aviation thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
On a related note, the company's ratio of current liabilities to total assets has decreased to 7.7%, which basically reduces it's funding from the likes of short-term creditors or suppliers. So this improvement in ROCE has come from the business' underlying economics, which is great to see.
The Bottom Line
To sum it up, FTAI Aviation has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. And a remarkable 606% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
