Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Allied Motion Technologies (NASDAQ:AMOT), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Allied Motion Technologies's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Impressively, Allied Motion Technologies has grown EPS by 29% per year, compound, in the last three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Allied Motion Technologies reported flat revenue and EBIT margins over the last year. That's not a major concern but nor does it point to the long term growth we like to see.

Are Allied Motion Technologies Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Allied Motion Technologies insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at US$89m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. At 18% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

Should You Add Allied Motion Technologies To Your Watchlist?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Allied Motion Technologies's strong EPS growth. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for Allied Motion Technologies (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you need to take into consideration.
