For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like OFG Bancorp (NYSE:OFG). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

OFG Bancorp's Improving Profits
In the last three years OFG Bancorp's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. It's good to see that OFG Bancorp's EPS has grown from US$3.04 to US$3.67 over twelve months. That's a 21% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. Our analysis has highlighted that OFG Bancorp's revenue from operations did not account for all of their revenue in the previous 12 months, so our analysis of its margins might not accurately reflect the underlying business. While we note OFG Bancorp achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 9.9% to US$610m. That's a real positive.

Are OFG Bancorp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. OFG Bancorp followers will find comfort in knowing that insiders have a significant amount of capital that aligns their best interests with the wider shareholder group. To be specific, they have US$25m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Even though that's only about 2.2% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like OFG Bancorp with market caps between US$400m and US$1.6b is about US$3.7m.
OFG Bancorp offered total compensation worth US$3.1m to its CEO in the year to December 2022. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Is OFG Bancorp Worth Keeping An Eye On?
As previously touched on, OFG Bancorp is a growing business, which is encouraging. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for OFG Bancorp, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. We should say that we've discovered 3 warning signs for OFG Bancorp (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
